Our youngest explorers get to learn the ropes of outdoor adventuring. At Harriman State Park, they experience camping, day hiking, and water sports alongside friends and caring leaders. Your child will learn more about plants and animals, respecting nature and leaving no trace. This adventure is perfect for kids who have never been to a sleep-away camp before.

Day 1: Adventure Begins

Parents drop-off at the AMC Outdoor Center at Harriman State Park in the morning between 8-9am. We spend our first day setting up our Basecamp, getting to know our Crews, and heading out on a short, beautiful hike around Breakneck Pond. We end our first day with our first Fireside around the campfire.

Day 2-3: Exploring Harriman State Park Trails & Appalachian Trail

For two days we get to grow closer to nature and each other. Morning time is for breakfast, pitching in on camp jobs, and Cairn Workshops (outdoor skills). In the afternoon on Tuesday, we’ll take a short hike around Breakneck Ridge and cool off with swimming and kayaking at the Outdoor Center. On Wednesday we get the chance to travel to a section of the famous Appalachian Trail, where we will hike a 3 mile out and back through the “Lemon Squeezer.” We end each evening playing games and cooking together around the campfire.

Day 4: Summit Bear Mountain

We face our biggest challenge of the week: summiting Bear Mountain. We’ll pack lunch, layers, and start our hike with a boulder scramble. After a few rests and games, we’ll reach the summit and celebrate our accomplishment while overlooking beautiful Hudson Valley views. At the top, we allow Basecampers 15-20 minutes of “SOLO” time, a Basecamp tradition, where our youngest Campers get to experience being alone in a special part of nature. This evening we host a storytelling night, where kids and leaders share their experiences in nature from the week.

Day 5: Stand up Paddle Boarding on Hudson & Trip End

We end our adventure with an epic morning on the Hudson River learning to stand up paddle board with ACA certified instructors. Basecampers learn correct stokes, safety, and get to practice taking their paddle board out in a safe estuary of the Hudson. We return to Basecamp, and end our time together with our last Fireside. Parents pick up between 6-7 pm.
