Dear Future Guide,
You may not have ever thought of yourself as a mountain guide or as a teacher, but here you are considering a job as an educator and wilderness guide. Maybe you’re an educator that has “been backpacking before but it’s been a while…”, or you’re an experienced guide “with experience leading adults but not kids…”, or maybe you’re a college student who is interested in learning new skills but hasn’t had experience leading trips or teaching youth. What I care about more than your experience is your ability to learn new skills and give “maximum effort” to your work. If you bring that, we can teach you the rest of the skills.
It is the quality of our leaders, more than anything else we do, that determines the experience on a Backyard Basecamp trip. We are looking for leaders with drive, good judgment, and commitment to our students; who will bring out the best in any group and who will measure their success as a leader by the success of their team.
We love our guides and consider them part of our family. As a guide for Backyard Basecamp, you will be treated with respect and trusted to apply your own creativity and passion to your groups to give them your individual flair.
Through our application process, I invite you to share with us your passion for working with students and your interest in joining a community of leaders who are eager to be role models and mentors this summer. While I can’t promise that this will be the best job you ever have, I can say that the chances are pretty good.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss further what it’s like to work for Backyard Basecamp.
